The VLTOR A5 buffer system is one of the most tried-and-true buffer systems available in the AR-15 world today. The A5 buffer was specifically designed at the request of the Marine Corps to bring an adjustable stock to their 20” M16 rifles. VLTOR brought them a completely new buffer system that used a rifle-length spring in an adjustable receiver extension tube. This translates to a smoother, slower bolt movement that reduces felt recoil and allows shooters to keep on target. Note: This buffer does not fit standard carbine extensions. This buffer is only compatible with rifles and pistols utilizing the VLTOR A5 Buffer System and receiver extension. Features: VLTOR patented design Body of the buffer is 7075 T6 aluminum Mil-Spec Type III clear hard coat anodized Middle A5 Buffer Weight of 5.33oz A5 buffers can only be used with the A5 receiver extension and come in 5 different weights, depending on the needs of the user. Most 16” AR-15s will use the lower weight H1 and H2 options. Short-barreled rifles or suppressed rifles, which experience a lot of backpressure, use H3 and H4 heavy buffers to counteract the violent action of the AR-15’s bolt. Always check with your rifle’s manufacturer specifications to determine what weight is appropriate in your firearm. In special cases, additional research may be done online to determine compatibility.

The VLTOR system is definitely interesting. It changes the recoil impulse in a way that slows the recoil "hit." I wouldn't say you should run out go get it, but it's an interesting upgrade of sorts. I haven't been able to test this yet, but I'm sure with the way it softens recoil on my 16" and 18" rifles, it would definitely be an upgrade on any SBRs or AR pistols.

Honestly, the single biggest thing you can do for your AR is to use a Vltor A5 Buffer setup for it. I will never not recommend having one. The benefits and the versatility associated with it are second to none.
